Star Wars fans eagerly anticipate each new movie release. The new movie coming out this year, Star Wars: Episode IX – Rise of Skywalker, is certain to draw huge crowds to theaters.
As the release date approaches, Star Wars fans are gearing up with movie plans, costumes, and other collectibles like Star Wars drones. Check out what we know so far about this exciting new movie in the Star Wars saga!
Rise of Skywalker Release Date
The new Star Wars movies Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th, 2019. This will be the final installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy following The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017).
Who is in Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker?
All of the familiar faces from the last two movies return, with Adam Driver playing Kylo Ren, the Supreme Leader of the First Order and Daisy Ridley playing the main protagonist, Rey. John Boyega stars as Finn, a member of the resistance, and Oscar Issac plays Poe Dameron, the high ranking x-wing pilot and resistance commander.
Characters from the original movie are scattered throughout the film as well, including Chewbacca and Billy Dee Williams playing his former role of Lando Calrissian.
Of course, Mark Hammil will continue to play his iconic role of Luke Skywalker. He “became one with the force” in the previous movie, which means it’s likely we will see him in ghost form similar to Obi-Wan when he trained Luke.
Even more amazingly, the filmmakers used unreleased footage of the deceased Carrie Fisher playing Leia from the last two films to give her an appearance in this upcoming one.
Plot
The film will mark the end of the amazing Star Wars franchise. The Resistance and the First Order will meet to battle one last time. We know very little information about the plot, since Disney has kept a very closed lid on anything.
According to leaked information, however, the story not only follows the end of the rebellion, but also the identity crisis of Rey. The more she learns about her family’s past, the harder her life becomes.
We also assume based on the trailers that Emperor Palpatine will make an appearance, due to images of him laughing at the end of one of the trailers. It’s possible he is still alive and revealed to be the true villain of the sequel trilogy, not Kylo Ren.
How Long is Star Wars: Episode IX – Rise of Skywalker?
Many expected the final movie in this Star Wars saga to be the longest. JJ Abrams, the movie’s director, recently surprised fans with a shorter than expected run time. Rise of Skywalker will clock in at roughly two hours and 21 minutes – that’s 141 minutes.
Is Rise of Skywalker the last Star Wars movie?
Rise of Skywalker is episode 9 of the Star Wars saga, and the last in the trilogy that began with The Force Awakens in 2015. This will conclude the nine movie-long series that began with the original Star Wars film in 1977.
This isn’t the end of all movies within the Star Wars franchise, however. Disney has three new unnamed Star Wars movies planned for release in 2022, 2024, and 2026. The next Star Wars movie for 2022 will be written by Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.
In the meantime, Disney recently released a television series within the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian. The Mandalorian is streaming exclusively on Disney’s new platform, Disney+.
Final Thoughts
There is a lot of hype and excitement about this film. Not only is it the end of the story, but there are still so many questions left that we need answers to.
Obviously, the overarching question of who wins the war needs to be answered, but how do they win? What will the galaxy look like after the wars? Who is the true villain? Does Rey follow the path towards the dark side, or follow in the footsteps of her mentor, Luke? Will Kylo Ren stay on the dark side?
With so many questions, the excitement for all Star Wars fans is palpable. Expect theaters to be packed for at least the first two weeks after its release. Good news though, it is expected to be released on Disney+ sometime in early 2020!
